That’s what my daughter says I am—Calendar Challenged. That issue first came into focus when I was writing the first Beaumont book. I convinced myself it was Saturday in real life because it was Saturday in the book. Turns out it wasn’t Saturday at all, and the kids had to set me straight. The same thing happened again earlier this year when, while working on a book, I had my computer’s calendar set on another year. My daughter wasn’t thrilled when I suddenly decided her birthday was on a Saturday instead of on a Tuesday.
This morning’s case of being Calendar Challenged was one for the books, as it were. I woke up convinced it was Saturday morning and that I had somehow neglected to write this week’s blog. Part of the problem is that the last two weeks with weekend celebrations and mid-week holidays have left me totally out of sync with the real passage of time. I would have checked my watch to be sure what day it was, but it turns out I was also having an attack of vertigo. In my spinning world, reading my watch right then was out of the question.
I spent a lot of this morning snoozing on my chair in the family room. When we finally got around to eating something, it was Mary’s dinner time, so what we had—leftover Shepherd’s pie—wasn’t really breakfast, brunch, lunch, or dinner.
At this point, I’m still a little wonky as far as walking is concerned, but I’ll still get my ten, probably by marching in place in my chair. (If my watch counts them as steps, I’m going to count them as steps!)
So Happy New Year everybody. Maybe when I wake up on New Year’s Day my interior calendar will have reset itself, and I’ll be back on the right track.
I constantly have to look at my phone to make sure I am on the right day of the week. There were a few times in my life where I woke up, got dressed for work, woke my wife up to get her going – just for her to tell me it was Saturday. Definitely embarrassing.

Hope you had a wonderful New Year and my prayer is that it is a Healthy one for all.
Totally understand the calendar challenge. When I retired, 12 years ago, I could not keep up with what day it was, every day was Saturday or Sunday until I got a desk calendar, so between my computer telling me the date, and the calendar telling me the day I made out okay. Last week we took a driving trip to D.C. Left on Christmas Day, returned home on New Years day. No computer, no calendar and the holidays falling mid week, I am still counting on my fingers trying to figure out what day it is. No problem today…BLOG DAY, YAY!
Blessing to you and Bill.
I’m glad I’m not alone in feeling this week is off somehow. That we haven’t already gone through the weekend – and it’s not even here yet. You go ahead and be “Calendar Challenged” if you must when you create your wonderful stories. I can totally imagine how you get so involved in your stories that you have a hard time bringing yourself back to the present. I find it the same reading them. I get very involved in the stories that when I take a break I find it odd that the room is so quiet. If that makes any sense.
So sorry you are not feeling well due to the vertigo…praying for you. I am also calendar challenged – in my mind, today is Sunday and it’s only because of your blog that I know it is Friday!
Be safe!
Vertigo is a pai6
Sending prayers for your health in the new year. Don’t sweat the small stuff.
HAPPY NEW YEAR to one of the best writers God ever put on this planet. I wish you all the best in the New Year. Keep those books rolling off the press. Without them, my reading life would be in a mess.
Stay safe and warm & cozy in the New year.

Oh my goodness, I think all of us retired people must be calendar challenged. As Dianne said, every day is Saturday or Sunday. Thank goodness for our cell phones that keep us informed.
I’m sorry about your Vertigo. I too have that from time to time. Take good care and I hope you have a wonderful 2026!
Happy New Year to you. Hope you will write many more blogs this year along with a couple great novels.
Vertigo can come from a zillion causes. Watch your blood pressure closely.
One afternoon my husband was picking songs for our Sunday service, like he always does on Saturday. I let him continue for awhile, then said, ‘you do know it’s Friday, don’t you? ‘ He looked up, thought a minute, then we both laughed! It has been a couple confusing weeks lately! Lol!
I totally understand. I haven’t know what day it is for two weeks.
I’m so sorry about the vertigo. I hope it’s nothing serious and you are feeling better. Happy New Year to you and your family.
Praying for your Vertigo. My parents went through that. I’m finally reading The Girl from Devils Lake….i listened, again, to every Brady’s books in order before reading it. You still have it Lady! My Mother in Law is now reading all my Beaumont books in order! I’m so happy that she can’t wait for the next 5 books in order! She’s 92 years old. A new Fan of yours!
Cool
Happy New Year!! And I’m praying that you feel much better!
From someone who is also 81!!
Blessings on you and yours ?
Good morning Judy, iIm glad I’m not the only one dealing with vertigo. It can’t be we’re getting old can it? Anyway have a wonderful, healthy, vertigo free New Year!
Very sorry to hear about the vertigo – ailments that no one else can see are so annoying.

I often forget what day it is. Since I now have 7 day week ends every week, it is easy to mix the days up. I also am finding that most times, I would rather just stay home than go anywhere. But I really need to go to Costco. My dogs and cats won’t like it if I run out of their food. That is one time that I really do need to know what day it is. Don’t want to go on Saturday or Sunday.
With the holidays on Wednesday eve and Thursday day my schedule was interrupted. Every day I had to tell myself what day it was just to stay on track. Happy New Year ?
Yes, it must be Friday today–a blog came! Praying about the vertigo. Hope the Lil Jul Aften wasn’t messed up by your not feeling well.
I want to thank whoever it was who commented, months ago, that he could get audio books online, from before CD’s were invented, by going on…was it Libby, or…? I’ve been gleefully discovering the JP books in audio form by going onto Hoopla on my tablet, and when I’ve finished with one, it says Up Next, and gives me the subsequent book. Probably when I get to the books written after the advent of CD’s, I’ll get some of those again, but there IS an advantage to this online form–two, in fact: they don’t skip, for one thing, and you can stop when you need to rather than having to wait till the end of a track.
YOU ARE DOING GREAT!! Love your honesty and perspective. Keep on doing exactly what you are doing: being real.
Even though I am retired, this time of year is very confusing! It always has been! ?
Haha – don’t count on it!
So sorry about the vertigo–Sandy Haug gets it also. These last two weeks have been very confusing as to what day it is.
Since retiring, I try to figure what day it is before looking at my phone. Most days I get it right! But these two weeks have been a challenge. Feel better and be careful
I haven’t been getting your blog the last few Fridays, but didn’t realize it until I realized I also had lost track of days and dates. Older minds/bodies are challenging, eh?
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Hopefully you will be back to your old self soon, JA. <3

Ok, I’ve said it before but I’m going to say it again. Your books, and I’m talking about Beaumont books, need to be made into a mini series. And the person, the only person, to play J.P. is…Tom Selleck! I was just reading a Beaumont book and watching a movie with Tom Selleck and he became J.P. in my head. It was perfect! Now, i know whenever i read him, that’s who he will be!
After reading your comment, I would have to agree that Tom Selleck would make a perfect J.P./Beau. I will envision him when I read through the book series next time.
I started reading a series with the main character is Lucas Davenport, also a detective. And it’s possible Tom Selleck would be a good choice if they ever made that into a TV series. Thanks to another blog reader for pointing me to those books.
I’m sorry but your website won’t take my comment. the only person, to play J.P. In a miniseries is…Tom Selleck! I was just reading a Beaumont book and watching a movie with Tom Selleck and he became J.P. in my head. It was perfect! Now, i know whenever i read him, that’s who he will be!
