I have been more than six feet tall since seventh grade. My paternal grandmother was more than six feet tall and so was her mother.\u00a0 So the tall gene runs in my family.\u00a0 And I can tell you from personal experience that being more than six feet tall in seventh grade was a peculiar kind of hell that came with zero social life.\u00a0 One of the teachers \u201cfixed me up\u201d with a date to the senior prom, and it was a miserable experience.<\/p>\n

A few years ago, when the first of my granddaughters shot past me in height while still a freshman in high school, I understood the problem. Ditto when the next two followed suit.\u00a0 Believe me, when the four of us are photographed together, I am definitely the runt of the litter.<\/p>\n

But it turns out that my granddaughters’ tall genes aren\u2019t MY tall genes.\u00a0 Those granddaughters\u2019 DNA hails from my husband\u2019s side of their family and from the family of my husband\u2019s first wife, Lynn Korn Schilb.\u00a0 All of the Korn uncles I ever met were tall drinks of water, too.\u00a0 But with the girls in high school, I could see the issues coming in their direction and decided to do something about it.<\/p>\n

I told them early on that when it came to Prom and Homecoming dresses, I was the grandmother they needed to call.\u00a0 And they have, time and again.<\/p>\n

The first prom dress shopping excursion happened in Tucson.\u00a0 When Lauren and I went to the first shop and the saleslady didn\u2019t reach either of our elbows, we gave each other a look over the woman\u2019s head and bailed.\u00a0 We found a gorgeous blue dress at the next shop, and we were off.<\/p>\n

So far we\u2019ve done four homecoming dresses and three prom dresses.\u00a0 Today we\u2019ll be shopping for the fourth one.\u00a0 The youngest of the \u201ctall\u201d girls is a senior in high school, and today is the day.\u00a0 Now that the latest round of editing is out of the way, I\u2019m looking forward to having some Grandma time.<\/p>\n

After this one, the next set of prom and homecoming dresses are a few years away, since Audrey is due to go to Junior High next year.\u00a0 That will be a different problem altogether\u2014one on the other end of the height spectrum, but we\u2019ll sort it out.\u00a0 It\u2019ll be fun.<\/p>\n

And then when the lonely grandson gets to that point\u2014a year or two later\u2014it\u2019ll be tuxedo shopping time instead of dress shopping time.<\/p>\n

In an interview recently, someone asked me about what keeps me going.\u00a0 I answered with the words \u201cfamily sustains me.\u201d<\/p>\n

And makes me happy.<\/p>\n
