Three firemen came to our house tonight<\/p>\n
Three young men in full firefighting regalia.<\/p>\n
Bella announced their presence<\/p>\n
Before they ever rang the bell,<\/p>\n
Letting us know there were men<\/p>\n
With flashlights on our porch.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
When I opened the door, they said they were there<\/p>\n
Because of the smoke alarm.\u00a0 I told them that<\/p>\n
It was only my husband, frying pork chops<\/p>\n
On the stove top in the kitchen.<\/p>\n
They said they knew the smoke alarm had been<\/p>\n
Turned off\u2014that they only came to see if we needed<\/p>\n
Help blowing the smoke out of our house.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
We told them thank you\u2014we were fine.\u00a0 We told them<\/p>\n
We had three extra pork chops, if they were interested.<\/p>\n
The youngest, a sweet-faced, kind young man,<\/p>\n
Looked back at me as though he might be hungry right then,<\/p>\n
As though he might be tempted to take me up<\/p>\n
On my offer of a slightly undercooked chop.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The others insisted that it was time to go,<\/p>\n
And so they did\u2014the three of them,<\/p>\n
Walking with their maglites in the dark back down our<\/p>\n
Very straight, steep driveway.<\/p>\n
We didn\u2019t really need them tonight,<\/p>\n
But, smoke alarm or not, they were here.<\/p>\n
I\u2019m glad they came, those bright-eyed, sweet young men,<\/p>\n
Brimming with purpose in their heavy suits of yellow and black.<\/p>\n
They came to help us when we didn\u2019t need them.<\/p>\n
