Spending hours in cars and planes doesn\u2019t leave much room walking.<\/p>\n<p>But today I have a bone to pick.\u00a0 Yes, I\u2019m a bit tottery and coming up on age 79, but I don\u2019t think of myself as being \u201cold.\u201d I think of myself as \u2026 well \u2026 being.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to TV viewing my choice is mysteries of one kind or another, both true crime and not.\u00a0 Naturally, when a new crime show called Elisbeth premiered last week, we watched it.<\/p>\n<p>By the way, auto correct does NOT like that name, but Elisbeth (This is the correct spelling!)\u00a0 is a seemingly scatterbrained but still very smart investigator.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve not yet watched the first episode, here\u2019s a spoiler alert.\u00a0 The story has to do with a drama professor who has been routinely taking advantage of the attractive young would be actresses in his program.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the plot has to do with texts supposedly sent by the victims after they\u2019re already deceased, thus making it possible for the killer to have a verifiable alibi.<\/p>\n<p>Everything is going along just swimmingly for the bad guy until Elisbeth notices that the time-critical texts all have double spaces at the end of sentences rather than just one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSee there?\u201d\u00a0 she says.\u00a0 \u201cThe victim didn\u2019t write these last texts.\u00a0 All of her earlier ones only have one space.\u00a0 The last ones have two.\u00a0 That\u2019s something old people do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yup, guilty as charged.\u00a0 In Mr. Biba\u2019s typing class at Bisbee High School, two spaces was the standard, and I can\u2019t seem to teach my \u201cold dog\u201d fingers the new one-space trick.<\/p>\n<p>Over the course of more than forty years of writing and hence typing, I\u2019ve noticed that my publishers have all switched over from two spaces to one.\u00a0 Rather than disrupting my concentration with the one space\/two space dichotomy when I\u2019m writing, I wait until the manuscript is finished.\u00a0 Then, before I send it to my editors, I do a global search and replace, changing all two spaces to one.<\/p>\n<p>So now this \u201cold\u201d gal is going to go down the hall and get her packing done because she\u2019s about to be on the road again.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll bet when Willie Nelson was writing that song, he used two spaces too, so from one old gal to one old guy, thanks for that.\u00a0 \u00a0It\u2019s a song that seems to work for both of us.<\/p>\n<p>Please note.\u00a0 \u00a0The above message is entirely of the two-space variety and will remain so.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By the time you read this, hopefully with the paragraph markers intact, I\u2019ll be in Arizona and on my way to Tucson for the Tucson Festival of Books.\u00a0 I\u2019m looking forward to it, but I\u2019m concerned about my step situation.
