I believe the above phrase began with my younger brother. \u00a0Arlan is a retired Army Colonel now, but as a child he had a unique way with words. \u00a0He called our next door neighbor, Mrs. Whiteaker \u201cDazzo.\u201d \u00a0When he got a splinter in his finger, he had \u201ca fiffeo in his fineo.\u201d \u00a0(Spell check disapproves of all of those, by the way.) \u00a0Arlan is \u201ctoo young\u201d to remember this but as near as my older sister and I can recall, \u201cBum Bum\u201d is what he called our mother\u2019s father, Grandpa Anderson, and when Grandpa and Grandma were visiting,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>nine o\u2019clock<\/span>was generally when they came upstairs from their downstairs apartment.<\/span><\/p>\n

Eventually,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>nine o\u2019clock<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>bum bum worked its way into the family vernacular, and when the folks issued those words as a command, it meant it was bedtime for everyone. \u00a0Before television made its way over the Divide and down the canyons to Warren, Arizona,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>nine o\u2019clock<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>was pretty much everyone\u2019s bedtime. \u00a0Only after the advent of TV did people start staying up for the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>ten o\u2019clock<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>news and then going to bed at ten fifteen sharp instead of nine.<\/span><\/p>\n

So now this story is going to segue off in another direction. \u00a0(Segue not to be confused with the motorized vehicle, Segway!) \u00a0For years, especially in the Beaumont books, I wrote about people having yappy \u201clittle dogs.\u201d \u00a0(By the way, Spellcheck disapproves of yappy as well. \u00a0I have to trick her to keep her from automatically changing it back to \u201chappy.\u201d) \u00a0I disapproved of little dogs, you see, because I had big dogs\u2014an Irish wolfhound and two pairs of steady-as-you-go golden retrievers.<\/span><\/p>\n

And then, because of Bella, we became Dachshund people. \u00a0And now we have not one but two yappy little dogs. \u00a0There are people out in the yard pruning trees at the moment, and the dogs are barking like crazy. \u00a0We have several deliveries set for today, so today is going to be one of those barking mad days, and you know what? \u00a0I deserve it.<\/span><\/p>\n

For years, I told my daughter not to worry if she came home a little late to feed her dogs or if she had to feed them early for some reason. \u00a0\u201cDogs can\u2019t tell time,\u201d I told her with great motherly assurance. \u00a0\u201cThey won\u2019t notice.\u201d \u00a0Like hell!<\/span><\/p>\n

Jojo, our younger little yappy dog tears up dog beds, but she doesn\u2019t tear up dog toys. \u00a0She uses them as a means of communication. \u00a0She has one particularly obnoxious squeaky toy, a lobster. \u00a0She has learned that if she grabs that and squeezes it like crazy while standing at our feet with reproachful looks aimed in our direction her food will come sooner than later. Mary doesn\u2019t stoop to squeaking, but she\u2019s a master when it comes to reproachful looks. \u00a0And when we can’t stand either the looks or that ungodly racket another moment? \u00a0\u00a0Viola! \u00a0Like magic dog dishes are deployed and food appears. \u00a0For reasons of convenience, the dogs\u2019s evening feeding time slowly was dialed up<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>from five PM to three PM<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>on the dot. \u00a0Which is exactly the time when Jojo starts squeaking these days, come hell or high water, daylight savings time or not. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Due to doggie digestive systems, eating earlier in the afternoon is not a good idea because things tend to, let\u2019s just say, run their course at inconvenient times, (like the middle of the night.) \u00a0\u00a0This is not a good idea if you happen to have another yappy little dog who has to be personally escorted to the door. \u00a0(Mary is not a fan of doggy doors.) \u00a0As a consequence, we\u2019ve been slowly moving doggy dinner time to later<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>in the evening\u20144:30 PM<\/span>. \u00a0The problem in making that change is that Jojo still starts squeaking\u2014relentlessly\u2014<\/span>at 3 PM<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

My friend,Alice, had a tiny little dog named Slick, a silky terrier\u2014another yappy little dog\u2014who started trying to get them to go to bed<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>at eight pm<\/span>. \u00a0I thought that was hilarious. \u00a0But here\u2019s the thing, Karma is a bitch! \u00a0Jojo has now become our<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>9 o\u2019clock<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Bum Bum yappy little dog. \u00a0She gives us<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>until 9:15<\/span>, actually, but at that point, she establishes permanent eye contact with Bill and insists it\u2019s bedtime. \u00a0So who\u2019s laughing now? \u00a0Alice and the ghost of Slick.<\/span><\/p>\n

So yes, having dogs in the family can be \u2026 well \u2026 challenging, but I wouldn\u2019t want to live without them. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u2019re considering changing Jojo\u2019s name to Bum<\/span> Bum, but that hasn\u2019t happened yet.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
