I\u2019m sitting here waiting for my shuttle to the airport and looking at news coverage of Hurricane Michael approaching Florida.\u00a0 It\u2019s not the best time to be heading for the east coast.\u00a0 I\u2019m on my way to do a library event in Newport News, VA, on Thursday evening.\u00a0 Newport News is a long way north of Florida, but it\u2019s in the projected path of the storm. My flight back is scheduled for Friday morning, about the time the remnants of Michael show up there.\u00a0 By then it should be little more than lots of rain, but I\u2019m heartsick for the people who will be directly affected. Take care people.\u00a0 Please take care!<\/p>\n
I\u2019m happy and amazed to report that my shoulder seems to have improved remarkably.\u00a0 I\u2019ve gone for a whole week now with zero pain other than a twinge now and then.\u00a0 That means I can fasten my bra without gasping in pain.\u00a0 I can brush my hair; brush my teeth; hold a can of hairspray; close my own car door; get dishes out of the cabinets; pour a half gallon of milk.\u00a0 After three months of being on the blink, it\u2019s such a relief.<\/p>\n
I\u2019ll be gone for two and a half days.\u00a0 Bill was supposed to go with me.\u00a0 Obviously THAT isn\u2019t happening. He will not be left to his own devices.\u00a0 He will have our property manager, Marthinus Becker, here to look after him, and the kids will be able to look in on occasion.\u00a0 He will also be properly supervised by our two dogs, Mary and Jojo who are relentless about requiring attention.<\/p>\n
Speaking of dogs.\u00a0 I remember telling my daughter that if she fed her dogs late it wouldn\u2019t be that big a deal because DOGS CAN\u2019T TELL TIME.\u00a0 Let\u2019s just say, when you\u2019re wrong you\u2019re wrong.\u00a0 Jojo can tell time.\u00a0 She loves squeaker toys, the most obnoxious of which is a very noisy lobster.\u00a0 At a quarter to eight and at a quarter to three, she grabs the lobster and squeaks like mad until somebody feeds her.\u00a0 Why am I writing this?\u00a0 It\u2019s a quarter to eight, and the noise is driving me nuts.<\/p>\n
An update on Mary.\u00a0 When she came to us two years ago, let\u2019s just say she had issues.\u00a0 Those are mostly much improved.\u00a0 One that lingered longest was her reluctance to go for rides.\u00a0 It\u2019s only in the last month or so when we\u2019ve said \u201cDo you want to go?\u201d that she makes a break for the back door rather than having to be carried, dragged, or tricked.\u00a0 And we\u2019ve now discovered a viable Dachshund loading system.\u00a0 We have a lovely little decorative stool that was once upstairs.\u00a0 Now it lives in the garage.\u00a0 The dogs have learned to wait until I push the stool up to the back door of the car and have time to open it.\u00a0 Then in they go.\u00a0 What I like best, however, is the two-dog race to get to the back door.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s not been a good few weeks for writing.\u00a0 I\u2019m down to the end of The A-list and will probably finish today or tomorrow.\u00a0 I\u2019ll have today on the plane and most of tomorrow on my own in a hotel.\u00a0 I\u2019m calling it a variation on a theme of going to a writer\u2019s workshop.<\/p>\n
