It\u2019s the Fourth of July today. \u00a0Here in Seattle, the marine layer is not yet burned off, so it\u2019s cool and comfortable with the thermometer registering a very pleasant 72. \u00a0Hearing that, I\u2019m sure those of you dealing with unbearable heat are rolling your eyes about the unfairness of it all. \u00a0I can\u2019t help remembering the Fourth of July in 1986. \u00a0That year my son and Bill went outside the set off some fireworks. \u00a0I followed, wearing a ski parka. \u00a0Watching Fourth of July fireworks when it\u2019s so cold you can see your breath just seems all wrong! \u00a0And, in my memory, the municipal fireworks display in Bisbee was always seen through a scrim of rain, since the first summer rainstorms usually arrived just in time to dampen the celebration.<\/p>\n
And speaking of fireworks. \u00a0I don\u2019t much like them. \u00a0For one thing, individual fireworks are supposed to be illegal, and I for one regard them as dangerous. So I\u2019ve never quite understood the fascination. \u00a0But as I sit here hearing the various thumps and booms, I let them remind me of \u201cthe rocket\u2019s red glare; the bombs bursting in air.\u201d because that\u2019s what this day is really about. As Lee Greenwood would say, \u201cI\u2019m proud to be an American cause at least I know I\u2019m free.\u201d \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0So thank you to all the men and women who have made that freedom possible for 241 years.<\/p>\n
And I\u2019m sitting here missing Bella. \u00a0Some of our dogs through the years were really skittish about fireworks and thunder. \u00a0Nikki and Boney come to mind, but Bella was like that, too. \u00a0When the fireworks started, that notably standoffish dog would be ready to cuddle. \u00a0Jojo doesn\u2019t seem to be the least bit bothered. \u00a0She is sprawled in Bill\u2019s chair, dozing her way through the day.<\/p>\n
However you\u2019ve spent your Fourth of July, I hope you\u2019ve been safe and happy.<\/p>\n
