My daughter asked me what I was going to blog about today. \u00a0\u201cI won\u2019t be talking about politics,\u201d I told her. \u00a0“People who read my blog are trying to get away from politics.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Then occurred to me that perhaps I should follow Professor Higgins\u2019s mother\u2019s advice when she was advising her son about how he should converse with his newly recreated former flower girl, Miss Eliza Doolittle. \u00a0\u201cPerhaps,\u201d she said, \u201cyou should stick to the weather and your health.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Health is out. \u00a0My readers have heard way too much about my health, your basic case of Too Much Information. \u00a0And in these days, even the weather has become politicized. \u00a0So the weather takes us straight back to politics.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to that, while we\u2019ve been having a pleasant and relatively cool summer here in Seattle, the rest of the nation has been suffering under a killer heat dome. \u00a0So my initial reaction was that I wouldn\u2019t talk about the weather at all. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And then I opened an e-mail from my brother.<\/span><\/p>\n

My mother always used to say, \u201cA wise man changes his mind. \u00a0A fool never does.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

And so I changed my mind, and decided to talk about both the weather and politics after all. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The image in the e-mail took my breath away. \u00a0I was unable to secure permission to post the image, but here’s the link: 97.3 The Eagle<\/a>. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The image is of a photo of a soldier in full combat uniform walking under the hot desert sun. \u00a0The message reads: \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I was going to complain about the heat today, but then I remembered: \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

It\u2019s not 120 degrees. I\u2019m not 5,700 miles from home. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

I\u2019m not in full uniform and carrying a 70 pound pack. <\/em><\/p>\n

I\u2019m unlikely to drive over a bomb today.<\/em><\/p>\n

Yes, I believe that when it comes to talking about weather AND politics, that certainly puts things in perspective.\u00a0<\/span>We can have our messy political fire fights. \u00a0We can complain to high heavens about \u201call those other guys.\u201d \u00a0We can vote.<\/span><\/p>\n
