{"id":1174,"date":"2016-04-22T06:17:18","date_gmt":"2016-04-22T13:17:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jajance.com\/Blog\/?p=1174"},"modified":"2016-04-20T13:25:26","modified_gmt":"2016-04-20T20:25:26","slug":"a-year-into-the-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jajance.com\/Blog\/2016\/04\/22\/a-year-into-the-program\/","title":{"rendered":"A Year Into the Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As of this week, it\u2019s a year since our fateful meeting with our doctor, the one who set us on the road to doing some serious walking.\u00a0 Going public about what we were attempting was my way of being accountable.\u00a0 Our grandson, Colt, calls it playing the \u201cstep game.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s a game for him.\u00a0 After all, he routinely does 17,000 steps a day without giving it a second thought.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not true for me.\u00a0 It takes time and energy and determination.\u00a0 When I\u2019m going full out, I walk at a rate of 1,000 steps per 10 minutes.\u00a0 In other words, it\u2019s an hour of walking for sure.\u00a0 In the beginning, a thousand steps took a lot longer than that, primarily because I had to sit down and rest between laps.\u00a0\u00a0 Now I can do an hour and be done.<\/p>\n<p>My yearly step average is 10,343.\u00a0 My weekly average took a sharp dip last week due to four days of driving back to Seattle from Tucson.\u00a0 One of those days was a 2,000 step day and another a 5,000.\u00a0 I walked extra steps over the weekend, but didn\u2019t quite hit the 10,000 average for the week.\u00a0\u00a0 My daily mileage for the year is 5.2 miles.\u00a0 That\u2019s 5.2 miles a day for a year!\u00a0 That comes to a total of 1898.\u00a0 That means I could have walked from Seattle, Washington to Bisbee, Arizona.\u00a0 For the first time in my life, I can feel actual muscles in my legs.<\/p>\n<p>Bill is walking a little less than I do.\u00a0 He averages about 6,000 steps a day, but his stride is vastly improved from the little old guy cane-assisted shuffle from last year at this time to what it is currently\u2014a real step;
